The Game of Love
Can Online Dating Ever Lead to Real Love?
With these types of lines, Nikki could quickly determine the man’s intellectual capacity if she was looking for something like that.
Hot raw sex was not something Nikki turned down, but hot raw sex often came with a price that she increasingly felt she had become too poor for mentally.
She was pretty sure that the man in front of her would hardly pass the test.
As I said, she had overheard his friends talking and it was not very impressive, but on the other hand she had not heard him say much at all and maybe that was why she had approached him anyway.
His silence.
His willingness not to become part of that cocky, boyish, cock-measuring jargon.
Her line was neither rehearsed nor thought out.
It just came.
Just like they used to do.
“You carry that suit well.
What else in life do you wear?”
He looked up at her as if he expected her to come to him and that look threw her off balance a little.
Not because men didn’t expect one thing or the other, but because his gaze matched hers and few men could match it.
Especially not men who belonged to the financial gangs.
“It’s unimportant to those who don’t know me, but I can say that I believe that nothing I carry can weigh me down.”
Nikki’s filter for handling situations like these froze for a second.
The answer was completely unexpected.
She expected things like, “I don’t know, can you help me find out?” or “Weights, while I’m at the gym” or similar brilliant ideas from pathetic brainchild like the proud bodies of men.
That was enough.
She could just say something sour, turn on her heel, and let them dream on.
But this wasn’t on her usual navigational chart.
Nikki came off, but that wasn’t the worst part.
He noticed she did it.
“Can I offer you something while you guess things that could weigh me down?
Maybe I’ll learn something.”
Satan.
He was also humble.
He didn’t fit in with what Nikki was up to in any way and now she didn’t know how to handle this, so she just came up with a “yes.”
That’s how they met.
She and Fredric.
And for six months they lived closely together.
Her Dating Line account was full of pictures of the two of them in the most wonderful poses imaginable.
But the pictures were not just superficial.
Nikki felt like the pictures.
Fredric gave her attention, and he gave her what she wanted: intellect.
A resistance.
Something she could build on and leave behind what she no longer wanted to be a part of.
Sadly, she was not able to do this herself.
Nikki had not come that far in her insights, but Fredric led her on the path.
Unfortunately, she did not see what was coming.
Fredric had not been looking for a woman to raise.
He had been looking for… a woman.
Fredric’s reason for breaking up was a trip, but at the same time he was unsure if he could commit himself now because after six months Nikki wanted more.
Her desire to flutter from flower to flower had been blown away.
She would soon graduate and get a job.
All the games she had learned as a child and that she had mastered were now nothing she even wanted to do with.
But the day he told her about his trip; everything came to nothing and now she was standing here.
Or walking.
On her way home.
From a failed date that didn’t even become a date but was now immortalized as another successful prey for her cursed Dating Line.
Fredric may have woken her up, but her own ego wasn’t enough to keep her awake.
It was enough for the only thing she could do: attract and be abandoned.
Somewhere behind the screens, people were still hoping to be understood.
